Perfect bound books are made by using adhesive on the edge of the pages (referred to as the paper block) to hold them together. The cover of the book is constructed of heavy paper board wrapped with canvas. The book is assembled using endpapers that are glued to the inside covers and then attached to the paper block. This creates a hinge so the book can open and close.

The Coptic sewn book is made using signatures, which are four pages folded into one another, that were all individually cut to size. They were then stitched to together and sewn to the wooden cover, which allows the book to open completely flat. The wooden cover was cut, drilled, stained, and decorated around the edge using a wood burning tool.
